Abstract:With the gradual intensification of water crisis, groundwater employed in aquaculture and corresponding recirculating aquaculture technology probably become the main concerns of aquaculture industry development in the near future. However, the current situation of groundwater contaminated by heavy metals and/or organics is rather serious in China. The present review summarizes the status of groundwater employed in aquaculture, and presents the advantages and disadvantages of recirculating aquaculture technology in removing heavy metals and/or organics, and especially for the great advantage of recirculating technology in removing contamination from groundwater employed in aquaculture. It also indicates that there still exist biological accumulation risks in employing groundwater in recirculating aquaculture mode. Hence, it is conferred that the transferring and/or destination of key pollutants (especially for heavy metals) in groundwater in recirculating aquaculture mode, the contribution of systematic purifying units to pollutant removal, and the impact of key pollutants on ecosystem are probably the main highlights for further research on the application of groundwater in aquaculture.
